Fittingly for a patriotic weekend, on Sunday the United States won the World Cup. Correction—our ladies dominated Japan for a win. Impressively, they also dominated TV ratings, with the largest television viewership of any soccer game in American history. And yet, unfortunately, they have to deal with pay inequality and other forms of gender bias. Hopefully all of the media attention will help bring about some positive change in wage disparity and sexism in the sport—and maybe even in regular life, too. If you’re not … Read more…

Llamas on the Lam, Caddy Shack and Other Takeaways from This Year’s College Media Conference

Remember when I said that you’d always remember where you were when the llamas escaped? Turns out I wasn’t wrong. The infamous llamas came up several times at last week’s College Media Conference, organized by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). And runaway llamas dominating the news weren’t the only important takeaway from the conference—did you know Caddy Shack is based on a real scholarship? I also had some more directly applicable takeaways from CMC … Read more…

Most of the TVP Comms team was up in the air this week (multiple points for some of us), and we can all agree: something needs to be done about air travel etiquette. While our tips could fill volumes, here are some common courtesy moves from this week that could really make flying a more tolerable experience for everyone: -Before you rocket your seat into recline, think about the person behind you. Stop, take a look, and recline slowly. Bonus points if you give your … Read more…

Information Overload: Rethinking College Orientation

It’s summer orientation time! Besides giving me a lifelong fondness for icebreakers and cheesy reflection activities, orientation was a truly transformative time for me in college. Not as an incoming first-year, but as an orientation leader. I made some phenomenal friends, problem solved under pressure, and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. OLs are required to be peppy and social; have I mentioned that I’m an introvert? It was challenging and so much fun, and quite different from my first experiences with orientation. As … Read more…

Week in Review I love silly animal-related videos, and I’m definitely not alone—so many cat videos, so little time. What’s not to love? They give you small bursts of joy whenever you watch them, and now I know there’s a scientific reason behind it. Once you’ve finished squealing in delight, scroll on down to … Read more…

BUT I have learned a thing or two, despite the fact that I still feel like a newbie a lot of the time. Week in Review Ahhhh summer. Okay, we still have a few weeks until it’s officially summer, but between my Memorial Day s’mores, national burger day this week, and a plethora of ice cream news (Ben and Jerry’s launched a new flavor AND there were some terrible omissions on this best ice cream shop list), summer food is in full swing. Summertime is a bonanza for eating—fresh strawberries, corn on the cob, anything on the grill, popsicles…I’m salivating thinking about it. I honestly don’t know what … Read more…
