Week in Review: Adventures in Wallpapering

We’re in the middle of a DIY project to install a built-in bookshelf in our living room, and like any DIY project, it’s more time-consuming than I thought it would be. But I’m happy to report that we’re making progress. I decided to wallpaper the wall behind the shelf for a subtle pop of pattern (Julia Rothman’s Daydream in French Blue), and I’m in love—it’s beautiful. I’m actually kind of sad that it’s going to be mostly covered up. It was stressful to hang (especially when the cat walks through the wallpaper paste) and I made some mistakes (and swore a lot), but overall, I think the wallpaper risk has paid off. Now on to actually installing the shelf so I can unpack the remaining boxes of books leftover from my move two years ago…

After deciding to disclose his HIV status publicly in a piece for Salon, Raymond Crossman, president of Adler University, continued to make news with an interview in the Windy City Times.

WGBH’s On Campus released a new series this week on innovation in higher education in Ohio, and included segments on how a local Dayton tax supports higher education, early college programs, and University of Dayton’s efforts to up its cyber security.

A USA Today College roundup on college courses in pop culture included Grinnell College professor Mark Laver’s class on rapper Kendrick Lamar.

This week on Inside Higher Ed’s Call to Action blog, don’t miss five strategies for building a great brand and the importance of having a shared sense of purpose on campus.

What we’ve been talking about:

In a Chronicle of Higher Ed article titled, “Spanier’s Conviction Highlights Lessons of Sandusky Scandal,” Erin offered her expertise and emphasized the importance of clear, honest communications during a crisis.

Erin shared her experience from the time she (kind of) went viral, as well as her key takeaways from #LeggingsGate and important reminders of what it means to be on social media.

We all dread creating time-consuming media lists, but Kristine has some tips to ensure the effort is worth it.

What’s next on our calendars:

On April 1, Erin will be presenting with Scripps College’s Binti Harvey at the Association of Governing Boards’ Workshop for Board Professionals. They will talk about the anatomy of a crisis and how to respond appropriately.

On April 4, Teresa will be presenting at the CASE Institute for Senior Marketing and Communications Professionals.

Teresa is a member of the planning committee for PRSA’s Counselors to Higher Education Senior Summit, which will be held in Washington, DC, April 5-7. At the Summit, Erin will participate in a panel discussion on the importance of a smooth presidential transition.

Teresa will serve as a panelist to discuss responsive leadership during American University’s summit for higher ed thought leaders, the NEXT University: A Summit for Innovators, on May 22.

I’m not usually a big podcast listener, but when really compelling reviews of and praise (including a passionate endorsement from my husband) for S-Town started popping up almost everywhere I turned, I decided to check it out. And I’m hooked. I’m halfway through and it’s turned into something so much better than I expected. I don’t want to give anything away, and in fact, I’d listen to it sooner rather than later so no one spoils the story’s devastating twist.
