As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc for institutions and individuals across the country and around the world, colleges and universities are bracing for continued chaos through the summer and into next academic and fiscal year. Many institutions already on the financial brink will contemplate permanent closure, and many more will take their place on the cusp of financial unsustainability. In a piece for The Hechinger Report this week, Teresa and I urge presidents and boards to be open, honest and transparent with their communities about their financial challenges and to turn away from silver bullet solutions. We advocate for thoughtful, responsible, well-planned shutdowns when the circumstances call for them.
